Bye Bye Mr. Sippy

Snuggles with my little guy are by far one of my favorite moments in any given day. When he first wakes up he begs for two things "nuggles" and "illkkkkk." I of course do my best to comply.

Most mornings around eight you will find three or four of us piled in our bed, Aiden leisurely drinking his sippy of milk, and Mommy snuggled close. Those quiet moments set the tone for our day.

Yet we must say goodbye to Mr. Sippy.

Today in occupational therapy Mommy learned so much about why we struggle with food. It was like a lightbulb went off and more pieces of the complex puzzle came clearly together. I love those moments!

Take it way back to our inability to transition to a fast flow bottle, or the seven sippy cups we went through before he could actually use one. He still can't transition to a different sippy.

Aidens first speech therapist called my attention to his lazy or slack jaw. She suggested cups and twizzlers. We have used plain cups off and on and Aiden will not eat a twizzler.

Today in OT we did our first eating session. His therapist pointed out how he eats and why it's a problem. He doesn't suck or chew properly because his jaw muscles aren't functioning as they should. He only eats with his front teeth and basically let's the food fall down his throat with little effort on his part. Lightbulb.

Now to fix it. Biggest hurdle? Saying goodbye to our easy flow sippy (cringe) and hello to a straw. Forcing him to work his mouth with drinking and eating as much as we possibly can.

We can do it!

Now say goodbye to Mr. Sippy.
