What We Eat

As the saying goes, you are what you eat. Shem and I have become increasingly aware of the links between food and health over the last few years. We have changed many of our eating habits but we still have a ways to go.

We buy very little pre packaged processed foods, eat organic when we can afford it, and recently joined a veggie "co-op" delivery service. These changes have certainly improved our health and energy levels. A good thing with two babies to keep up with!

As Aidens digestive problems, skin issues, and "seasonal allergies" have progressed we have increased our research into the possible culprit of food allergies or sensitivities. He recently had food allergy testing and is not allergic to any foods that we are aware of, but that doesn't rule out food sensitivities or intolerances. The more we learn about SPD the more we are curious about the possibility that food could be aggravating those symptoms as well.

Many children with SPD and other similar disorders see dramatic improvement with a gluten and dairy free diet. The chemical additives and colorings in mainstream foods can't possibly be doing us any good and so we are going to investigate those possibilities ourselves.

As I am already dairy free and Aiden eats next to nothing we will officially be dairy, gluten, and food coloring free in the days to come. We also will try to avoid additives and soy as much as possible and reintroduce the offending foods slowly and one at a time to see if it makes any behavioral or digestive change. This sounds like a huge undertaking but honestly we are so close to that mark that all we will be saying goodbye to is pasta and bread. No biggie. Right?

Stay tuned over the next month or so for updates as to how we are doing!
