Shem was in nursing school working as a life guard and I was a medical receptionist. We made ends meet, barely. Shem quit working about 2 months before he graduated because of clinical rotations and the demands of his studies. If we thought we were broke before, we were certainly hurting then! Somehow we made it work and weeks after our first anniversary we moved to Kentucky.
The emergency fund was drained dry during the move. Shem's first paycheck was 3 weeks out and I didn't start working for almost 6 weeks. We managed with a little help from Mr. American Express until the paychecks rolled in. STUPID MOVE. Somehow the little you charge lingers FOREVER.
Then we began living like everyone else.
We were bringing in three times what we made our first year scraping by. We weren't rich but we weren't broke either. We ate out ALL the time, enjoyed more movies than your local teenager, and wanted for nothing. Living on two different shifts made it harder to communicate financially and easier to do things the convenient way.
Then we had an addition to our family...
Uh hu, hello Mrs. Spectra. My car died one week after I started my new job so this BRAND NEW baby came to live with us. Don't tell Dave! We knew then it wasn't the wisest move, we know now just how much it really hurt us.
Then we adopted Aiden. Paid for on the American Express. No the timing wasn't what we had planned when discussing adoption, but God's ways are better and he is certainly worth every penny. You don't want to know how much a kid costs monthly with interest though, you just don't!
A few months ago we finished off one of Shem's student loans. Our tax return just came in and today oh happy day.
We PAID OFF MRS. SPECTRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and the second student loan.
Now we have but one debt left. Adoption debt. We are sooooooooo close to that super sweet Dave Ramsey shout. Trust me, you will hear it. :)
